The Role of Program Coordinator

  • Ensures that there is sufficient monies to cover equipment, program implementation, and communications
  • Receives Senior Management approval to launch program and liaises with them when necessary
  • Acts as 'cheerleader' and general motivator
  • Assembles an Implementation Team and a Green Team of Green Reps
  • Chairs (or designates replacement) all Implementation or Green Team meetings
  • Ensures that Teams' members understand and support the program
  • Trains Green Reps to educate their colleagues
  • Arranges for removal and disposal of deskside garbage cans (where applicable)
  • Arranges for equipment ordering and placement
  • Arranges for distribution and labeling of containers
  • Ensures that any changes in janitorial, waste hauler, and recycler contracts, because of the new program, are included and signed off
  • Ensures that a comprehensive communications program is put together
  • Liaises with Communications Branch Rep to arrange a launch event

  • Environmental Coordinator or person in charge of the building's current recycling program

The Role of Implementation Team

  • Assist Green Coordinator to set up and implement program
  • Ensure that the special concerns of each member's area - contracts, storage and removal of garbage and recyclables, health and safety requirements, fire regulations, etc. - are brought to the table and resolved
  • Set aside sufficient time from regular duties to asssist Coordinator

Green Team (Green Reps)

The Green Team is a temporary one, needed to assist the Coordinator in implementing the program and to troubleshoot for a brief period after its launch. Green Team Reps are essential to the success of the program. They educate their colleagues about it and act as a liaison between the Coordinator and the general staff.


The Role of Green Reps

  • Attend Green Reps meetings to learn about the program
  • Educate colleagues about the program
  • Assist in displaying and distributing communications materials
  • Give input into decisions about number and position of central recycling and garbage bins
  • Assist Coordinator in labeling and distributing central and desk top equipment
  • Assist Coordinator in removing and disposing of deskside garbage cans (where applicable)
  • Develop team spirit and support for the program
  • Assist in distribution of posters, signs, etc.
  • Act as troubleshooters and deal with local program problems as they arise
  • Give feedback to Coordinator on staff's reaction to the program
