CONGRATULATIONS
HERE IS YOUR NEW GARBAGE CAN
NO, THIS IS NOT A JOKE!
Please use it for food items, muffin wrappers, wax paper, fruit peelings, etc.
When it is full, please take it to the nearest central waste area (there will be one large container centrally located for approximately every 15 desks). Regular sized waste cans and recycling containers will still be located in lunch rooms and elevator lobbies throughout the building.
All recyclable materials, ie. paper, cans, bottles, polystyrene must be placed in the appropriate recycling containers in your area.
We know that a lot of people are very emotionally attached to their garbage cans and we hope to make this transition as painless as possible.
We also hope that these new receptacles do not disappear from offices. Therefore the first one will be free to all office occupants, after that there will be a charge of $2.50 to replace missing cans.
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
Our 2011/2012 plan includes a commitment to reduce our garbage by a further 20%. In order to do this we must only put those items that truly belong in the solid waste stream in our waste containers. Most of the items that end up in the garbage are recyclable, such as paper, cans, and glass bottles. By implementing this system we save money on waste hauling as well as on garbage bag usage. In testing this system we found that by only putting those items which truly were garbage, these containers only needed to be emptied once per week.
We strongly suggest that staff invest in reusable mugs for coffee and other hot beverages. Staff that bring their lunch to work are encouraged to pack a litterless lunch. This can include reusable containers and lunch bags. Not only will this cut down on waste but will save the number of trips you will have to make to empty your new waste container. We need to ensure that our operations are efficient, that we adhere to our environmental code of practice as well as all relevant legislation in terms of waste reduction. Your ongoing support of our waste reduction initiatives are important to everyone in maintaining our commitment to the environment and cost savings.
