Magna Hoedown

Magna “Rides Towards Zero Waste”, Supported by CleanRiver® and Planet Earth Recycling

Saturday, September 15th was both a busy and exciting day for the CleanRiver® team. With CleanRiver®’s direction and support, the organizers of the Magna Hoedown introduced composting to the waste program for this year's event. This added an innovative, yet logistically challenging, element.

A partnership for compost collection

CleanRiver® engaged the services of Planet Earth Recycling for handling all of the compost collection for the event. They generously donated the roll out carts for use on the floor as well as the carts behind the scenes for consolidation and pick up.

Recycling graphics to stream compost materials successfully

Graphics are a critical component of a successful recycling program. CleanRiver® design staff designed an overhead sign for the compost roll out carts, nicknamed the Compost Topper. This allowed patrons of the event to approach the carts from both sides and to know at a glance what materials were acceptable for the compost stream.

In conjunction with the compost stream, CleanRiver® used the TPM51 2-stream – 2/3 recycling, 1/3 waste. Our environmental team, who were on hand that evening to do bag change-outs, noticed a tremendous reduction of materials going into the waste stream. For many of the containers, the waste stream was so minimal that no change outs were required throughout the night.

As the night started to wind down at midnight, the CleanRiver® crew pulled the last of the bags and containers off the floor and brought them to the holding area. Though very tired, the environmental team – especially our CleanRiver® Cleanup Crew – were proud of the accomplishments of the evening. We're looking forward to expanding both the program and the CleanRiver® Crew next year!

By all accounts it was a very successful evening – great music, awesome food, funds raised for local charities, and an amazing recycling/compost program implementation!

Now to start planning for next year…

The Magna Hoedown

Each year, Magna International pulls out all the stops with their Magna Hoedown event in our mutual hometown of Aurora, Ontario. The goal of the evening is to raise funds for local organizations and charities, and it's a sold-out show every year, hosting 5,000 patrons!
