CleanRiver™ Recycling Solutions – Mixed Materials Unit

August 24, 2011

Application in QSRs and Hospital Environments

A quick-service restaurant client based in New York City owns several upscale restaurants. They were looking at implementing a new waste management system made from sustainable material and looked to the CleanRiver™ design engineers for ideas. After testing a custom recycling station made from recycled plastic lumber with multiple streams and featuring a Corian® counter top for the opening plates, the team decided they’d like to take the challenge one step further

Custom Design

Mixed Material Multi-Functional Recycling Station

After discussing and confirming their needs, CleanRiver™ designed a mixed material recycling station for them. The unit utilized sustainable wood, stainless steel, and solid surface (Corian®). The stainless steel and solid surface met their hygiene and infection control needs, while the sustainable wood met their aesthetic needs. Key to the success of a recycling program is clear and simple labeling. The cabinet is a combination of engraved then filled labeling on the opening plates and Quick Change Graphic Posters. Both leave hygienic, smooth surfaces which are easy to clean and minimize exposure to bacteria and viruses. The customer also identified a need to incorporate a condiment/tray storage unit that could be located on either the right or left hand side of the unit, depending on the traffic flow in each individual restaurant. The resulting dual level unit allowed the condiment station to be separate from the tray storage section to ensure better hygiene practices, and was designed to attach to the recycling station from either side depending on site requirements.

Though the recycling station is meeting their current needs, it was also designed to adapt to meet their future needs. The client recognized that as regional infrastructures on the MURF side improve and change, new streams would be collected so they needed to be able to adapt quickly and cost effectively. The unique liner insert (patent pending) is made from 100% regrind material and can be easily converted in terms of number of streams and percentage allocated to the collection of each. The opening plates are stream-specific and interchangeable. All modifications can be done on site making it easy and convenient for the client.

Working with CleanRiver™ allowed this client to use a rapid implementation method to address their waste stream needs while preserving the image of their restaurants and maintaining their ROI.
