  • Transition™ Ready Recycling Stations in Aesthetic Wood Veneers

    Challenge

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder … or in this case, the customer and, every customer has their own ideas about what looks good in their environment. While clients committed to maintaining a successful recycling program recognize the need for highly functional container systems and the benefits of being able to adapt to changes in their collection streams, many also want to maintain an existing aesthetic including millwork and other wood surfaces.

    Solution

Working closely with discerning clients in upscale franchisee environments like QSRs, Airports and Malls, CleanRiver™ determined to provide a variety of aesthetic options to house their revolutionary Transition™ patent pending configurable bag retention technology. Supported by Interchangeable opening plates and Quick-Change graphics, these recycling stations offer an unprecedented combination of functionality and style.

  • Recycling at Highway Rest Stations

    Challenge

A prominent leader that provides food services to rest stations, airport, and other travel venues internationally, consulted CleanRiver™ about plans to introduce a flexible recycling program beginning with travel rest stations that combine fuel, food, and other retail services.

After a tour of our manufacturing facility and detailed discussions with our design engineering team, they decided that CleanRiver was the company they wanted to work with.

The client wanted two units - a smaller one for the parking lot and a larger capacity one for just outside the entrance doors.

    Solution

The CleanRiver team designed a custom 51 gallon, single configurable compartment recycling container with two streams for the parking lot, and a larger 72 gallon recycling station with two compartments providing two 36 gallon streams for outside the entrance doors. The recycling stations selected are made of durable recycled plastic lumber ideal for outdoor applications. The slant top design serves two functional purposes: it self-cleans while shedding snow and rain, and it prevents travellers from leaving items on the top.

Since the highway is travelled by thousands of people every day from all over, graphics were a key factor in helping travellers know which items could be recycled and in which stream. Bilingual labels were also incorporated to accommodate the large French speaking portion of the population.

This custom design has been ordered by other customers to use in the following outdoor applications: school yards, parking lots, and arenas.

  • Flexible Waste Containers for Community Banquet Halls

     Light Weight Garbage Can

    Challenge

A large city in the Greater Toronto Area was looking for a waste container that would address their current waste and future recycling needs in community banquet halls. The banquet halls currently only collect waste. They knew that they would need a recycling container in the future but were unsure of the number of streams to be collected. Due to the nature of the banquet hall business, they also required a solution that was light-weight and portable so that the units could be moved according to the set-up of the event.

    Solution
The complexity and uncertainty of future stream collection led the city buyers to consult with CleanRiver™ for expertise in forward thinking recycling solutions. After viewing the various facilities, the CleanRiver™ team developed an early version of what is now the TPM Series Transition™ configurable recycling and waste container in a 53 gallon size. This unique and configurable recycling container met the city’s need for single stream waste collection perfectly but also provided them with the flexibility to transition to 2, 3 or 4 streams in the future as their recycling program evolved. TPM Series recycling and waste containers are molded with light weight low density polyethylene (LDPE) so banquet hall managers can easily move them around depending on the event taking place.

  • Bottle Cap Collector

    Challenge

In recent months, several CleanRiver clients have been struggling with the issue of bottle caps. Haulers want the caps removed from the recycling stream because they are made from different types of plastics than the bottles. When two types are mixed, one contaminates the other, reducing the value of the material or requiring resources to separate them before processing. Since caps melt at a higher temperature than the bottles, this leads to unmelted plastic within a batch – ruining it all.

Some clients were trying to collect them separately from their recycling stream and placed a bucket beside the recycling container while others were doing nothing, yet understood the issue.

    Solution

The CleanRiver design team created custom units to incorporate a unique bottle cap collector stream. Now clients have the option of a cap collector as an integral part of their recycling unit adjacent to the plastics recycling stream. This has led to greater success in the separate collection of the caps from the bottles, which in turn has increased the value of the plastics collected.

  • Mixed Materials QSR Recycling Station

Application in QSRs and Hospital Environments

A quick-service restaurant client based in New York City owns several upscale restaurants. They were looking at implementing a new waste management system made from sustainable material and looked to the CleanRiver™ design engineers for ideas. After testing a custom recycling station made from recycled plastic lumber with multiple streams, the team decided they’d like to take the challenge one step further.

    Custom Design

After discussing and confirming their needs, CleanRiver™ designed a mixed material recycling station for them. The unit utilized sustainable wood and stainless steel framing and top. The stainless steel  met their hygiene and infection control needs, while the sustainable wood met their aesthetic needs. Key to the success of a recycling program is clear and simple labeling. The cabinet is a combination of engraved then filled labeling on the opening plates and Quick Change Graphic Posters. Both leave hygienic, smooth surfaces which are easy to clean and minimize exposure to bacteria and viruses. The customer also identified a need to incorporate a condiment/tray storage unit that could be located on either the right or left hand side of the unit, depending on the traffic flow in each individual restaurant. The resulting dual level unit allowed the condiment station to be separate from the tray storage section to ensure better hygiene practices, and was designed to attach to the recycling station from either side depending on site requirements.

Though the recycling station is meeting their current needs, it was also designed to adapt to meet their future needs. The client recognized that as regional infrastructures on the MURF side improve and change, new streams would be collected so they needed to be able to adapt quickly and cost effectively. The unique liner insert (patent pending) is made from 100% regrind material and can be easily converted in terms of number of streams and percentage allocated to the collection of each. The opening plates are stream-specific and interchangeable. All modifications can be done on site making it easy and convenient for the client.

Working with CleanRiver™ allowed this client to use a rapid implementation method to address their waste stream needs while preserving the image of their restaurants and maintaining their ROI.

  • Convention Center Recycling

    Challenge

A large convention center in downtown Toronto, Canada is striving to attain a zero-waste facility with complete stewardship as their goal. They originally purchased the Recycled Recycler™ Pedestal Recycling Station (4-stream) to use throughout their exhibit floor and opted for minimal graphics.
The units were subjected to a lot of rigor and abuse from both their transportation methods (forklifts) and their storage methods which resulted in direct damage to them. They also found their waste streams were not clean.

    Solution
CleanRiver™ worked with the convention center to design a new recycling container that addressed their issues. Appropriate materials were added to the construction of the unit to meet the structural requirements and to help alleviate the added pressure of the forklifts. Bumpers were added along the top rim to mitigate the damage caused during transportation and storage.

  • Compact Indoor Recycling Bin

    Challenge
Recycling has become a mandatory initiative in all forward thinking businesses including upscale offices and meeting rooms where a discrete and sleek aesthetic is preferred, often in a small space.

    Solution
The CleanRiver design team developed this compact three stream recycling station for the meeting rooms of a large urban convention center. The rounded edges, compact size and customized graphics provided all the needed functionality while maintaining an elegant and light appearance.

  • Quick Service Restaurant

    Challenge
High-traffic Quick Service Restaurants implementing recycling programs are often frustrated by contaminated collection streams. Most start with traditional blue bins and quickly learn that a more comprehensive program is needed to obtain clean streams and buy in from their customers.

    Solution
The CleanRiver design team worked closely with this popular quick serve restaurant to develop a full series of collection centers that are functional, attractive and flexible. The custom recycling station shown can be shipped with or without the optional tray holder which can be removed in the field allowing the unit to be repurposed at the entrance, parking lot or other location as needed.

  • Parks & Stadiums

    Challenge
Outdoor public spaces require a large volume of convenient and accessible recycling stations on very tight budgets.

This park was determined to help the environment by collecting recyclables but their budget constraints would not allow them to put large, multi-stream, recycling centers around the whole park.

    Solution
The CleanRiver design team engineered a single compartment recycling center that accommodates three streams to allow this municipality to provide recycling stations throughout the park within their budget constraints.

  • Future Ready Design

    Challenge
It can be difficult to accurately gauge the necessary streams and capacity needed for each in a new recycling program and this is further complicated by changes in local collection regulations. Businesses responding to changing trends can incur significant cost and find the success of their recycling programs compromised.

    Solution
The CleanRiver design team has extensive experience and has developed modular, flexible and adaptable options we like to think of as “future ready”. The custom recycling station shown features interchangeable restrictive opening plates that adapt to changes easily.  Knowing that the opening plates can be changed on location gives businesses peace of mind and confidence in the success of their recycling program while saving money and contributing to a healthy ROI.
